You Are Now Free To Move About The Subcontinent
May, 30, 2011

While not the cheapest way to get around India, flying across the subcontinent will still seem like a bargain to most western travelers, especially those craving comfort and quick trips.

A burgeoning crop of budget airlines and a stable of their more established counterparts offer daily flights across the country. In my many trips to India over the years, I’ve tried several of these airlines. Here are my two cents:

The award for best overall service goes to … Jet Airways.

The award for speediest check-in ... Spicejet.

The award for best flight attendant uniforms … Kingfisher Airlines.

The award for best-looking male flight attendants … Jet Airways.

The award for best branded merchandise … Indigo Airlines.

The award for most clearly stated luggage policies … Jet Airways.

The award for best prices … Spicejet and Indigo Airlines.

The airline to avoid award … Air India.

U.S. Travelers Won't Always Save When Booking From a Foreign Country
May, 20, 2011

American travelers looking to save money by booking from foreign countries may be in for a pricey surprise: travel isn't always cheaper when purchased from bargain countries like China and India.

While there are some deals to be had, many of those same prices can be accessed from the U.S. by selecting a foreign version of the booking engine and paying in the foreign currency.

Of course, travelers will need to account for exchange rate fluctuations and pay foreign transaction credit card fees.

Still, don't look for too many huge discounts. In India, for example, the best deal I've seen is a $30 a night cheaper hotel.

Flight booking for the indecisive traveler
April 27, 2011

If you're the kind of traveler who can't make up your mind, there are ways to give yourself a little wiggle room.

Both Orbitz.com and Virgin Atlantic offer 24-hour courtesy cancellations on flight reservations, but there are a few catches.

Orbitz allows fliers to cancel reservations until 10 p.m. CT the following day with no fees or penalties on all but a handful of airlines. As long as you haven't booked with AirTran, Virgin America, JetBlue, Spirit Airlines or USA3000, you can cancel online and credit card will be credited within a few days. Just go to My Trips, select cancel and wait for the courtesy cancellation screen.

Virgin Atlantic offers a 24-hour blowing off period, during which time you can cancel a reservation for a full refund. To be eligible, you'll have to book with an agent over the phone, and you'll have to make your cancellation by phone within exactly 24 hours.

KLM offers something slightly different but potentially as useful. The Dutch airline will allow fliers to hold a reservation for up to 14 days for a fee of about $20. It's one way to keep shopping around while keeping what might be the best deal in your back pocket.
